Vegetables to sow in October
As the rusty autumn leaves cover our gardens, and colder temperatures set in, it can seem like the vegetable garden is hibernating. However, October is a wonderful opportunity to sow hardy vegetables that will develop over the winter months.
The benefits of sowing in autumn:
- Overwintered plants grow stronger root systems making them more resilient.
- Plants that establish in autumn are ready to grow once spring sets in.
- There are fewer pests compared to spring.
- Plants don't require as much water as evaporation is slower in colder months.
Green Manure is also a great option to add to any empty spaces in your vegetable patches, beds, or containers to improve soil structure over winter.
