Vegetables to sow in October

Oct

As the rusty autumn leaves cover our gardens, and colder temperatures set in, it can seem like the vegetable garden is hibernating. However, October is a wonderful opportunity to sow hardy vegetables that will develop over the winter months.

The benefits of sowing in autumn:

  • Overwintered plants grow stronger root systems making them more resilient.
  • Plants that establish in autumn are ready to grow once spring sets in.
  • There are fewer pests compared to spring.
  • Plants don't require as much water as evaporation is slower in colder months.

Green Manure is also a great option to add to any empty spaces in your vegetable patches, beds, or containers to improve soil structure over winter.
