Garlic Wild Ramson is a perennial woodland herb known for its distinctive garlic aroma and culinary versatility. Thriving in moist, loamy soils and damp, shady environments, it’s often found along stream banks and in shaded woodland areas, where it forms dense carpets of lush green leaves.

In spring, it produces clusters of delicate white star-shaped flowers, with a strong, fresh fragrance. Both the leaves and flowers are edible, offering a mild garlic flavour perfect for soups, pestos, salads, and more.

Garlic Wild Ramsons – Cultivation advice

Sowing Directly Outdoors

  • Sow seeds from August to October.

  • Scatter seeds thinly on the soil surface or press them gently into the soil.

  • Do not cover the seeds, as they require light to germinate.

  • Water the soil lightly after sowing.

  • Seeds will overwinter naturally and germinate between March and April.

  • Full plant establishment may take 2 to 3 years.

  • First-year growth is typically slow, with small and underdeveloped plants.

Sowing Indoors

  • Sow seeds on the surface of moist compost and gently press them in; do not cover.

  • Maintain a temperature of 18 to 22°C for a period of 2 to 4 weeks.

  • After the warm period, subject the seeds to cold stratification at –2°C to +4°C for 4 to 6 weeks.

  • Following stratification, move the seeds to a temperature of 5 to 12°C to encourage germination.

  • Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 8 cm pots for further growth.

Germination Notes

  • Germination can be erratic and slow, occurring anywhere between 18 days and 12 months.
  • If germination does not occur, repeat the warm and cold stratification cycle as needed.
