A classic cottage garden herbaceous border perennial producing brilliant scarlet red flowers held in dense, upright clusters all summer. Commonly referred to as ‘Maltese Cross’ or ‘Jerusalem Cross’, this flower is easy to grow and very hardy. It will thrive in a wild range of conditions, even next to ponds, and stands 18-36in when in flower.  It can be cut back after initial flowering to encourage a second bloom and is excellent for attracting butterflies and bees.

  • Sow from early spring under cover ensuring a minimum soil temperature of 15C to achieve germination.
  • Seeds show be finely sown and covered with no more than 3mm of growing medium.
  • Prick out to small pots or trays when large enough to handle and grow on.
  • Harden off prior to planting out from May onwards.
  • Seeds can be sown up to mid July as the plants are hardy and will survive all but the harshest winter.
  • Plants may flower first year only from the earliest sowings.
