An attractive perennial herb (not to be confused with sweet or Florence fennel, an annual vegetable grown for its swollen bulbs) grows to 2m and can be planted in a decorative border or as a herb. The wispy aniseed flavoured leaves, similar to Dill are utilised with soups, fish, pork, sauces and salads. The tall attractive stems also carry a yellow umbel of flowers in the summer. Extremely popular with butterflies and beneficial insects.
