Aquilegia (Columbine) ‘Nora Barlow’ is a hardy perennial with distinctive, fully double flowers in shades of pink and cream. Ideal for borders, cottage gardens, or lightly shaded areas, it blooms from late spring to early summer.

  1. Start the seeds indoors from January-April.
  2. Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist, seed compost and lightly cover.
  3. Keep at a temperature of 15-18c until germination occurs.
  4. Seeds will usually germinate within 21-35 days, though germination can be slow and irregular.
  5. Ashort cold period can help break dormancy.
  6. Place the sown container in a refrigerator for 3-4 weeks, then return to warmth.
  7. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
  8. Grow on in bright light, keeping the compost just moist.
  9. Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions before planting out.
  10. Plant out after the risk of frost has passed into a sunny or partially shaded, well-drained site.
  11. Space plants about 30-40cm apart to allow room for growth.
  12. Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
  13. Remove spent flowers after blooming, or leave seed heads if you want natural self-seeding for future seasons.
