Vegetables to sow in September

Sep

As September arrives, as does autumn, and with it lower temperatures, shorter daylight hours and wetter weather. Although most spring sown vegetables are being harvested this month, there is still plenty of sowing that can be done!

It is the ideal month to sow hardy vegetables like Kale, Mustard and Spinach and planting now means that harvests can be enjoyed earlier next spring and summer.

As you finish harvesting tomatoes, why not transform your greenhouse into winter production by planting quick growing lettuce which can be enjoyed in salads in the coming months.

Empty space can be utilised by sowing green manure for over-wintering which will help with soil structure and stabilise nitrogen levels ready for spring.
