Growing Instructions

  1. Select a sunny position with firm, well-drained soil. Shallots dislike heavy, waterlogged ground.
  2. Prepare the soil several weeks before planting by removing weeds and incorporating well-rotted garden compost to improve soil quality and drainage.
  3. Allow 30cm between each row for ease of weeding and airflow.
  4. Place each bulb so that the pointed tip is just above the soil surface.
  5. Space bulbs about 18cm apart within the row.
  6. Water lightly after planting, but avoid overwatering. Shallots prefer moist but not soggy conditions.
  7. Keep the rows weed-free throughout the season.
  8. Harvest when the leaves turn yellow and fall over.
  9. Lift carefully and allow shallots to dry in full sun or a well-ventilated place for 2-3 weeks.
  10. Once dry, store in a cool, dry area.

(If not planted immediately, open bag and spread somewhere cool and dry to prevent the sets sweating and rotting)

• Best sown in the autumn immediately upon receipt to allow more established roots before winter and larger bulbs.
• Use well-drained soil which is enriched with organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. This improves drainage and nutrient availability.
• Choose a location that receives full sun, ideally at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. This helps produce larger bulbs.
• Try to avoid planting in the same place as onions from current or previous year.
