Saffron Thistle (Carthamus tinctorius) ‘Zanzibar’ has large, bright orange, thistle-like flowers. Ideal for sunny borders, wildflower gardens, or cutting, it also attracts pollinators.

  1. Start the seeds indoors from February-April.
  2. Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist seed compost and lightly cover.
  3. Keep at a temperature of 14-18c until germination occurs.
  4. Seeds will usually germinate within 10-21 days.
  5. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
  6. Grow on in bright light, keeping the compost just moist.
  7. Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions before planting out.
  8. Plant out after the risk of frost has passed into a sunny, well-drained site.
  9. Space plants about 30-40 cm apart.
  10. Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
  11. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming and reduce self-seeding if not desired.
