Linum Usitatissimum, commonly known as Flax, is a captivating annual plant boasting delicate, sky-blue blossoms. Reaching up to 3 feet tall, the plant’s green stems support a profusion of dainty, five-petaled flowers.

The botanical name “Usitatissimum” reflects the plant’s extensive utility – linseed oil can be extracted from its small, brown seeds, while the fibrous stems can be woven into strong, lightweight linen fabric.

Linum Sky Blue – Cultivation Advice

  1. These seeds need to be sown either in the spring (after the danger of frosts) or in the autumn.
  2. Clear any weeds and loosen the soil in the area.
  3. Sow directly outdoors by scattering seeds and lightly covering them with 3mm of soil.
  4. Keep newly sown areas consistently watered until the seedlings are established.
  5. Once the seedlings have developed, thin them out to a spacing of approximately 15-30cm.
  6. Deadhead the flowers if you don’t want them to self-seed.
