- Sow undercover between April-May.
- Plant the seed 1.5cm deep, on its edge to reduce the risk of rotting.
- Lightly cover and place in a propagator at a temperature of 20c or higher.
- Gradually harden off the seedlings after the first true leaves develop.
- Transplant into the growing position late May to early June, after the risk of frost has passed.
- Choose a well-drained, sunny site sheltered from strong winds.
- Provide plenty of space for the plant to spread.
- Water as needed and keep the area weed free for good air circulation.
- In autumn, mature gourds will begin to turn yellow-brown and dry.
- They will feel light in weight, with the outer skin becoming loose.
- Harvest any remaining fruit before the first frost and allow them to finish drying in a warm, well-ventilated position.
- When fully dry, the blossom-end cap can be broken off and peel the skin off.
- Quickly rinse the sponge in water to prevent plant juices from oxidising and staining the fibres.
- Remove the seeds at this stage.
- The sponges can then be rinsed in a 10% bleach solution if a whiter colour is desired.
Gourd ‘Luffa’ produces long green fruits which mature into natural sponges when peeled. Ideal for growing on trellises or fences in a sunny spot.
