Grown mainly to dry and utilize as birdhouses, just leave them to dry, drill an access hole for the birds add a drainage hole or two and hang them up. Also very popular for ornaments. Germination is slow and often low, with temperature being critical, however once under way very easy to grow on. 90-110 days from germination and 6-8 weeks to dry inside.
Cultivation Advice Gourd Birdhouse
- Sow inside from 4-6 weeks before the last frost in good quality moist compost at 2 seeds per pot.
- Ensure seeds are maintained at 70-85F during germination to avoid rotting.
- Low temperatures are the most common reason for seed failure.
- Best started in an airing cupboard or heated propagator.
- Transplant outdoors in when soil is warm.
- and plant in a warm, sheltered sunny location.
- Add mulch after planting out to prevent soil from drying out.
