Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) Tortoise Food is a rosette forming, winter-green perennial found in a very wide range of habitats including wetlands, sand dunes, mountains, gardens, wasteland and pastures. The plant group has numerous micro species adapted to a variety of growing conditions.  Our seed is harvested from lowland meadows.

  1. Sow the seeds directly outdoors from January-March in a well-prepared, well-drained seedbed.
  2. Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of the soil and press in.
  3. Don’t cover as light aids germination.
  4. Keep the soil consistently moist until seedlings emerge.
  5. Seeds will usually germinate within 10-21 days, depending on conditions.
  6. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them to 20cm apart to allow space for growth.
  7. Water moderately during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
  8. Leaves can be harvested once the plants are established.
  9. Remove flowers to prevent self-seeding.
