- Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist seed compost and lightly cover.
- Keep at a temperature of 20-24c until germination occurs.
- Seeds will usually germinate within 7-14 days.
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
- Grow on in bright, warm conditions, keeping the compost just moist.
- Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions before planting out.
- Plant out after the risk of frost has passed into a sunny, well-drained site.
- Space plants about 100cm apart.
- Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
- Stake taller plants if necessary to support the long, hanging flower heads.
Amaranthus caudatus ‘Red’ has striking, deep red, cascading flower tassels. Ideal for borders, it adds height and dramatic colour to summer gardens.
