A vigorous and attractive Heirloom variety. Red Russian kale colours up well even before cold weather, but especially after cool weather. The oak-leaf shaped grey green leaves of this kale. Are deeply cut and are intersected by purple-pink veins, lightly tinged with purple on the margins. Excellent for salad greens when leaves are thumb size and tender; larger leaves make delicious and nutritious cooked greens as per other kale varieties. Grows up to 60cm tall.

Kale Borecole Heirloom Red Russian – Growing Instructions

  • Plant from early spring as soon as you can work the ground or in autumn for an over-winter crop.
  • Sow 1cm deep, 2.5cm apart in rows 45-75cm apart.
  • Thin seedlings to 20-30cm apart which can be transplanted or eaten.
  • Kale germinates best in cool or warm soil temperatures with even moisture.
  • Choose an area with full sun.
  • Enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure.
  • Harvest leaves from the outside of the plant first.
  • Kale is very hardy and quality actually improves after a frost.
