Herb Comfrey Symphytum Officinale

Herb Comfrey (Symphytum Officinale) is a deep-rooted perennial herb which is traditionally used as a green manure. It is often used for improving soil fertility by accumulating key nutrients such as potassium, calcium, and phosphorus from deep within the subsoil. These nutrients are stored in the plant’s broad, fast-growing leaves, which can be composted, used as mulch, or processed into a nutrient-rich liquid fertiliser often referred to as “comfrey tea.”
In addition to its soil-enriching properties, Comfrey produces attractive bell-shaped purple flowers that are highly beneficial to pollinators. It thrives in a variety of conditions, performing well in both full sun and partial shade.
Although highly effective as a natural fertiliser, Comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids and should not be consumed by humans or animals.

Cultivation Advice  Herb Comfrey Symphytum Officinale

  • Sow from March to June in a seed-bed or in pots indoors.  The seed should be placed in a chilled environment (fridge) for 14-28 days to activate the seed prior to sowing, hence greatly improving germination rates.
  • Sow seeds thinly, 12mm (½in) deep in drills 30cm (12in) apart. Can also be sown in pots or trays under glass and transplanted.
  • Transplant when large enough to handle to 60cm (2ft) apart between plants.
  • Keep well-watered until established.  Leaves can be cut regularly throughout the summer and autumn.
