Garlic Elephant

Elephant garlic bulbs (Allium ampeloprasum) can grow with adequate water to 140mm in diameter and dwarfs your usual culinary garlic cloves in size. In growth the foliage will be the size of your average leek. The flavour is much milder than traditional garlic making it ideal for roasting or casseroles. Best planted as early as possible September to February and harvested late June. Fully winter hardy.

Supplied as split bulbs (individual cloves), in paper bags, stapled shut with the name and contents clearly labelled.

Growing Instructions

  • Best sown immediately upon receipt through to February, the earlier the larger the yield.
  • The soil needs to be well prepared with added well-rotted organic matter. The site needs to be in full sun.
  • Cloves should be planted at least 8 inches apart and twice the depth of the clove below the surface with the pointy end upwards.
  • Keep the young plants free of weeds and ensure they are well watered especially in early summer, however, cease watering in the last 2-3 weeks prior to harvest.
  • Harvest when the upper leaves start to yellow and dry. This will normally be during January.
  • Place harvested garlic in full sun to dry out when pulled and only store dry undamaged bulbs.

Supplied as cloves, hand graded by size. Clove weight as stated at the point of storing/packaging.
