Carrot ‘Amsterdam’ is a popular and reliable variety, producing uniform, cylindrical baby carrots. Its roots are tender and sweet, with vibrant colour and excellent flavour, making it ideal for succession sowing to provide a continuous harvest throughout the season.

Growing Instructions

 

  1. Loosen and remove any rocks from the soil.
  2. Avoid freshly-manured soil as this can produce hairy, rough roots and will cause forks and splits.
  3. Directly sow the seeds outside on moist soil, when the temperature is 12c+.
  4. Lightly cover the seeds and water as necessary. Germination should occur between 10-20 days.
  5. Around 1 week after the seedlings have germinated, thin them to 3-5cm apart
  6. As the seedlings grow, eventually thin them to 10cm.
  7. Dispose of thinned seedlings to avoid attracting carrot fly.
  8. Regularly weed and water the area.
  9. Put soil around the tops to prevent green crowns.
  10. If carrot fly is an issue then with a fleece or fine netting.
