- Start the seeds indoors from January-April.
- Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist, seed compost and lightly cover.
- Keep at a temperature of 15-18c until germination occurs.
- Seeds will usually germinate within 21-35 days, though germination can be slow and irregular.
- Ashort cold period can help break dormancy.
- Place the sown container in a refrigerator for 3-4 weeks, then return to warmth.
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
- Grow on in bright light, keeping the compost just moist.
- Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions before planting out.
- Plant out after the risk of frost has passed into a sunny or partially shaded, well-drained site.
- Space plants about 30-40cm apart to allow room for growth.
- Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
- Remove spent flowers after blooming, or leave seed heads if you want natural self-seeding for future seasons.
