Spinach perpetual is a Swiss chard grown as a spinach for its tender leaves and long, productive growing season. It can be harvested over a much longer period than traditional spinach, with crops continuing into autumn and winter.

  1. Sow directly between March-September.
  2. Prepare the soil and rake it to loosen the soil.
  3. Sow 12-18 seeds per 30cm.
  4. Sow heavily in drills which 30mm deep and are 30cm apart, then cover with soil.
  5. Germination is best in cool soil.
  6. Avoid sowing in very hot weather as this can affect germination.
  7. Germination typically occurs in 14-24 days depending on conditions, this may be slower in colder weather.
  8. Thin seedlings as they grow, using the thinnings as baby leaves.
  9. Harvest leaves as needed, taking a few from each plant to encourage continuous growth.
  10. Protect with netting to prevent pests, and cover late crops with a cloche to protect against frost.
