Helichrysum (Strawflower) Tom Thumb Mix

Price range: £1.29 through £9.99

Commonly referred to as “Strawflowers” this annual is a colourful addition to any border with bright flowers held above the main foliage, although its primary attraction is for drying its everlasting flowers.

  • Sow late winter to mid spring at 24C (75F) in a fine seed compost on the surface and gently firm down.
  • Light aids germination, and enclosing in a polythene bag will help retain moisture during germination.
  • Germinates in around 7-15 days.
  • When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and gradually acclimatise to outside conditions planting out after the last frost 12in apart in full sun.
  • Alternatively if space permits sow directly into the ground into rows 45cm apart in late spring.
  • Thin the seedlings out to around 10cm apart. The plants are usually sturdy enough to support themselves.
  • Pick when foliage is quite dry and the flowers are well open, tie in small bunches and hang upside down in a dry, well ventilated place until dry.
