- Choose a sunny location with at least 6–8 hours of sunlight daily.
- Soak the roots in water up to an hour before planting.
- Prepare the soil by removing all weeds and digging in plenty of well-rotted manure.
- Space plants 130-150cm.
- Dig a hole large enough to spread the roots.
- Plant with the crown just below soil level and firm the soil around the roots.
- Water thoroughly and add a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- First-year pruning:Cut all shoots back by 50–70% to encourage strong growth.
- Second-year pruning:Select 8 strong new stems for the main framework and shorten them by 25%. Remove any shoots growing in the centre and cut remaining shoots back to within four buds of the main stem.
- Refresh mulch each spring around March.
