Dahlia ‘Totally Tangerine’ is an anemone-flowered variety with single outer petals surrounding a ruffled, dense centre. With long, sturdy stems, it’s ideal for cut flowers or adding vibrant colour to borders and pots. The pollinators love this variety.

  1. Dahlia tubers can be potted up in March and April and kept undercover until after the last frosts in May. If you don’t have space to pot up your tubers, go straight to No. 5.
  2. Use a large pot (2 or 3 litre) half-filled with compost. Place the tuber with the stalk stem pointed up. Label and water lightly. Place the pot somewhere frost-free – a greenhouse or sunny windowsill.
  3. After a few weeks the shoots will begin to push up through the soil.
  4. Do not water them again until you plant them out.
  5. Plant out when the frosts are over in May. If you are planting tubers directly into the ground, you can plant them just beneath the surface – not too deep.
  6. Water regularly if the weather is dry and keep picking the dahlias once they are flowering to encourage more growth.
  7. Taller varieties will need staking

How to overwinter dahlias
1.Protect your dahlias from frost over winter. After the first frost you can choose to either leave the tubers in the ground or dig them up and store them in a frost-free place.

2. You can leave them in the ground if you live in a mild region or have light, free-draining soil. It is a risk as repeated hard frosts can lead to some losses. Cut down the stems and cover with mulch or homemade compost.

How to store dahlia tubers inside
1. Carefully dig up the tubers and shake off excess soil.
2. Cut the stems back to approx.10cm and trim off any damaged tubers.
3. Leave for a few weeks to dry out the tubers
4. Store in shallow crates or boxes covered with compost, straw or newspaper in a garage or shed until spring.
