Carnation (Dianthus) Scarlet Red

Price range: £1.24 through £10.29

Carnation (Dianthus) Scarlet Red is a fragrant annual with large, double scarlet-red flowers on strong stems. Ideal for sunny borders and cutting gardens, it makes an excellent long-stemmed cut flower.

  1. Start the seeds indoors from February-April.
  2. Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist seed compost and gently press in.
  3. Don’t cover as light aids germination.
  4. Keep at a temperature of 18-21c until germination occurs.
  5. Seeds will usually germinate within 7–21 days.
  6. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
  7. Grow on in bright light and cooler conditions, keeping the compost just moist.
  8. Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions before planting out.
  9. Plant out after the risk of frost has passed into their final flowering position.
  10. Choose a sunny, well-drained site for best growth and flowering.
  11. Space plants about 25-30 cm apart to allow room for development.
  12. Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
  13. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming throughout the season.
  14. Cut the flowers to extend the flowering period.
