- Prepare the ground before planting
- Choose a sunny location with at least 6–8 hours of sunlight daily.
- Prepare the soil by removing weeds and digging in plenty of well-rotted manure.
- Space plants 200cm apart, with 200cm between rows.
- Dig a hole large enough to spread the roots.
- plant the cane with the crown 5 cm below the soil surface, and firm the soil around the roots.
- Water thoroughly and add a mulch layer to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Support the canes on a trellis or wires as they grow.
- In February or March, cut back any dead or wayward shoots.
- Refresh mulch each spring around March.
