- Sow the seed directly outdoors in a well-prepared seedbed from April-June or September-October.
- Choose a site that is not highly fertile, as this allows wildflowers to compete successfully with weeds.
- Clear the area of all weeds by repeated cultivation or herbicide treatment.
- If using a herbicide, leave it for at least 2 weeks to allow any newly exposed seeds to germinate. Repeat the process at least twice to reduce weed pressure.
- Prepare the ground and firm the surface by treading or rolling to provide good seed-to-soil contact.
- Scatter the seed thinly and evenly at a rate of 1-2 g per square metre.
- For better distribution, mix the seed with fine dry sand to make it easier to see where the seed has been sown.
- Don’t cover the seed, but press it firmly into the soil using a roller or by treading.
- Water lightly if the soil is dry, but avoid waterlogging.
- Once established, remove weeds that emerge to reduce competition.
- Some stronger species may dominate after 2-3 seasons, so occasional over-seeding may be needed to maintain a balanced mix.
