Key Facts

Choose a sunny location with at least 6–8 hours of sunlight daily.
Prepare the soil by removing all weeds and digging in plenty of well-rotted manure.
Space plants 2 m apart, with 2 m between rows.
Dig a hole large enough to spread the roots, plant with the crown just below soil level, and firm the soil around the roots.
Water thoroughly and add a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Install support such as a trellis or wires for the canes as they grow.
In February or March, prune any dead or wayward shoots.
Refresh mulch each spring around March.
