Mimosa Pudica – Sensitive Plant . A very unusual plant commonly referred to as “Sensitive plant” as the leaves fold up if touched or in a breeze. Touch the leaf and the leaves fold and the leaf stalk drops as if hinged. This happens quickest when the plants are in bright sunlight and they return to the open state over a few minutes. In addition the plants do produce attractive fluffy pink flowers from mid-summer onwards. Needs to indoors or a heated conservatory. Not suited for the garden.
Cultivation Advice Mimosa Pudica – Sensitive Plant
- Soak the seed in hand hot water 60C (140F) for 20-30 minutes minutes before sowing.
- Sow late winter to mid spring at 70-75F on the surface of good well drained fine seed compost and gently press down.
- A household windowsill will not be warm enough, therefore they will need some additional heat / propagator.
- Do not exclude light as this is needed for germination. Seal in a clear bag to retain moisture if not in a covered heated propagator. Remove after germination.
- Germination usually takes 21-30 days.
- When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 3 inch and finally 5 inch pots.
