- Sow indoors from January–April on the surface of moist seed compost.
- Lightly press seeds in but don’t cover, as light is needed for germination.
- Keep at 18-20c. Germination takes 14-21 days.
- When seedlings are large enough to handle, prick out into individual pots and grow on in cooler, bright conditions.
- Harden off before planting outdoors once frost risk has passed.
- Plant in partial shade or sun, in moist, well-drained soil, spacing 30-45cm apart.
- Alternatively, direct sow outdoors May-June.
- Thin seedlings as needed.
- Water regularly during establishment but avoid waterlogging.
- Deadhead spent flowers or leave some to self-seed naturally.
- A hardy biennial, usually flowering in its second year.
