  1. Start the seeds indoors from January-March.
  2. Soak the seeds in warm water for 2 hours before sowing to aid germination.
  3. Sow the seeds vertically in moist seed compost and lightly cover.
  4. Keep at a temperature of 20-23c until germination occurs.
  5. Seeds will usually germinate within 14–28 days.
  6. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
  7. Grow on in bright light, keeping the compost just moist.
  8. Provide supports or canes early, as this is a fast-growing climbing plant.
  9. Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions before planting out.
  10. Plant out after the risk of frost has passed into a sunny, sheltered, well-drained site.
  11. Space plants about 45-60 cm apart and provide a trellis, fence, or pergola for climbing.
  12. Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
