- Start the seeds indoors from January-March.
- Soak the seeds in warm water for 2 hours before sowing to aid germination.
- Sow the seeds vertically in moist seed compost and lightly cover.
- Keep at a temperature of 20-23c until germination occurs.
- Seeds will usually germinate within 14–28 days.
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
- Grow on in bright light, keeping the compost just moist.
- Provide supports or canes early, as this is a fast-growing climbing plant.
- Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions before planting out.
- Plant out after the risk of frost has passed into a sunny, sheltered, well-drained site.
- Space plants about 45-60 cm apart and provide a trellis, fence, or pergola for climbing.
- Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
