- Start the seeds indoors from March-April.
- Cold stratify the seeds for 5-7 days in a refrigerator before sowing.
- Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist, well-drained seed compost and lightly cover.
- Provide temperature fluctuation to aid germination, around 26c during the day and 18c at night.
- Seeds will usually germinate within 10-21 days.
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
- Grow on in bright light, keeping the compost just moist.
- Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions before planting out.
- Wait to plant out until the weather and soil have warmed.
- Space plants about 30-45 cm apart to allow room for growth.
- Protect young plants from slugs and snails.
- Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
- Deadhead spent flowers if desired, although plants may self-seed freely for the following season.
