- Start the seeds indoors from February-April.
- Sow the seeds about 3-5mm deep in moist seed compost.
- Keep at a temperature of 18-20c until germination occurs.
- Seeds will usually germinate within 18-28 days.
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
- Grow on in bright light, keeping the compost just moist.
- Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions before planting out.
- Plant out after the risk of frost has passed into their final flowering position.
- Space plants about 30cm apart.
- Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
- Deadhead spent flowers to reduce excessive self‑seeding.
Cerinthe major var. purpurascens (Honeywort) has striking purple and blue flowers. Ideal for sunny borders or cottage gardens, with colour that intensifies in cooler autumn nights.
