Camassia quamash is an early summer-flowering bulb that produces upright stems with star-shaped, deep blue to violet blooms. Reaching a height of around 40cm and is ideal for borders, meadows, and naturalistic planting schemes. This hardy perennial thrives in moist, well-drained soil and performs best in full sun to partial shade. Ideal for planting in drifts or among grasses and other wildflower species due to it attracting pollinators.

Growing Instructions

  • Plant between September-November before the ground freezes. 
  • If the soil is heavy clay, loosen it to a depth of around 15cm and mix in organic matter. 
  • Use a hand trowel or bulb planter and dig a hole which is around 3 times the depth of the bulb height. 
  • Place the bulb with the pointed end facing upwards. 
  • Gently cover the bulb and lightly compress the soil. 
  • Alternatively, for a more naturalised effect, you can throw a handful of bulbs into a larger dug-up area instead of planting each bulb individually.
