Sow directly outdoors, once the soil has warmed.

Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil.

Rake the soil and removed any visible stones.

Soak seeds for up to an hour before sowing to aid germination.

Sow seeds thinly in shallow drills around 2-3cm deep.

Space rows around 30cm apart.

Water the drill before sowing if the soil is dry.

Cover the seeds with soil and lightly firm down.

Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and active growth.

Thin seedlings to around 8-10cm apart once they are large enough to handle.

For baby beets, harvest when roots are around golf-ball size.

For larger roots, allow them to grow on but harvest before they become woody.
