Cultivation – Alliums

Once your bulbs arrive, take them out of their packaging and lay out in a box so they can breathe.

Plant between September-November, before the ground freezes.

Loosen the soil to a depth of around 30cm and mix in organic matter to improve the drainage and soil quality.

Use a hand trowel or bulb planter and dig a hole which is around 2-3 times the depth of the bulb.

Place the bulb with the pointed end facing upwards.

Gently cover the bulb and lightly compress the soil.

Tips – Alliums

  • Choose a location that receives full sun, ideally at least six hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • After flowering, either remove the blooms or leave them to dry out to be ornamental
  • Allow foliage to die back naturally before removing it to help replenish nutrients for next year’s growth.
