Growing Instructions
- Select a sunny position with firm, well-drained soil. Shallots dislike heavy, waterlogged ground.
- Prepare the soil several weeks before planting by removing weeds and incorporating well-rotted garden compost to improve soil quality and drainage.
- Allow 30cm between each row for ease of weeding and airflow.
- Place each bulb so that the pointed tip is just above the soil surface.
- Space bulbs about 18cm apart within the row.
- Water lightly after planting, but avoid overwatering. Shallots prefer moist but not soggy conditions.
- Keep the rows weed-free throughout the season.
- Harvest when the leaves turn yellow and fall over.
- Lift carefully and allow shallots to dry in full sun or a well-ventilated place for 2-3 weeks.
- Once dry, store in a cool, dry area.
(If not planted immediately, open bag and spread somewhere cool and dry to prevent the sets sweating and rotting)
