Poppy (Papaver commutatum) ‘Ladybird’ is a brighter relative of the cornfield poppy, producing crimson single blooms with a black blotch. Each plant can produce around two dozen flowers, making it ideal for borders, cottage gardens, and cutting.

  1. Sow seeds directly outdoors from March to May in well-drained soil.
  2. Scatter seeds on the surface and press lightly into the soil or lightly cover.
  3. The seeds need light to germinate.
  4. Germination usually takes 10-20 days at 15-20c and can be erratic.
  5. Thin seedlings to 20cm apart once large enough to handle.
  6. Plant in a sunny, sheltered location with well-drained soil.
  7. Water lightly to keep soil moist until established but avoid waterlogging.
  8. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming.
  9. Make succession sowings every 2–3 weeks for a continuous display.
