Thunbergia alata Mix is a fast-growing climber that produces an abundance of open-faced flowers in shades of orange, yellow, and cream with a distinctive dark centre. Flowering from summer into autumn, it quickly covers trellises, fences, and arches, creating a vibrant display.

  1. Sow seeds indoors from November to February.
  2. Surface sow onto fine, well-drained seed compost and cover with approximately 10mm of vermiculite.
  3. Maintain a temperature of around 20c for best germination. Seeds usually emerge within 10-20 days.
  4. Once seedlings appear, grow on at a cooler temperature of about 15c in a bright position.
  5. When large enough to handle, prick out into individual pots.
  6. Harden off carefully and plant outdoors after the risk of frost has passed.
  7. Space plants 30cm apart in a sunny, well-drained position.
  8. Provide suitable support such as a trellis, arch, or fence for the plants to climb.
