Cultivation – Layered Pot

  1. Plant between September-November, before the ground freezes.
  2. Use a container with drainage holes and fill with good-quality compost.
  3. Add grit to the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
  4. Add a layer of compost, then plant the bottom layer with tulips.
  5. Place the tulip bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards and cover with compost.
  6. Plant the middle layer with mid-season flowering bulbs such as narcissi and hyacinths.
  7. Cover with compost, then plant the top layer with muscari.
  8. Make sure the bulbs are close but not touching.
  9. Gently cover the final layer with compost and lightly compress.
  10. If the compost is very dry, water lightly after planting.
  11. Don’t water again until spring unless the compost becomes very dry.
  12. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering.

Cultivation – Planting in the Ground

  1. Plant between September-November, before the ground freezes.
  2. Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil.
  3. If the soil is heavy, loosen it to a depth of around 10-15cm.
  4. Mix in organic matter to improve drainage and soil quality.
  5. Add a handful of grit or coarse sand to the planting hole to aid drainage.
  6. For the best display, plant the tallest varieties towards the back and the shortest towards the front:
    • Back: Narcissi ‘Browning’ – plant 10-15cm deep.
    • Middle: Tulip ‘Concerto’ – plant around 15cm deep.
    • Middle/front: Hyacinth ‘Stuyvesant’ – plant 10-15cm deep.
    • Front: Muscari ‘Manon’ – plant 8-10 cm deep.
  7. Place each bulb with the pointed end facing upwards.
  8. Space the bulbs so they are close enough for a full display but not touching.
  9. Gently cover the bulbs and lightly compress the soil.
  10. If the soil is very dry, water lightly after planting.
  11. Place each bulb with the pointed end facing upwards.
  12. Gently cover the bulbs and lightly compress the soil.
  13. If the soil is very dry, water lightly after planting.
  14. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
