Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) ‘Chater’s White’ produces tall spikes of peony-type, fully double white flowers. In their first year, stems may be shorter and often bear single blooms. Perfect for sunny borders or cottage gardens, it blooms from mid to late summer and is excellent for cutting.

  1. Start the seeds indoors from February-April.
  2. Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist seed compost and lightly cover.
  3. Keep at a temperature of 18-20c until germination occurs.
  4. Seeds will usually germinate within 14–21 days.
  5. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
  6. Grow on in bright light, keeping the compost just moist.
  7. Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions before planting out.
  8. Plant out after the risk of frost has passed into their final flowering position.
  9. Space plants about 45-60cm apart to allow room for growth.
  10. Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
  11. Stake taller plants if necessary to support flower spikes.
  12. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming.
  13. Alternatively, seeds can also be sown directly outdoors from June–August.
