- Start the seeds indoors from February-April.
- Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist seed compost and lightly cover.
- Keep at a temperature of 18-20c until germination occurs.
- Seeds will usually germinate within 14–21 days.
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
- Grow on in bright light, keeping the compost just moist.
- Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions before planting out.
- Plant out after the risk of frost has passed into their final flowering position.
- Space plants about 45-60cm apart to allow room for growth.
- Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
- Stake taller plants if necessary to support flower spikes.
- Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming.
- Alternatively, seeds can also be sown directly outdoors from June–August.
Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) ‘Chater’s Double Mix’ produces tall spikes of fully double flowers in a variety of colours. Perfect for sunny borders or cottage gardens, it blooms from mid to late summer and is excellent for cutting.
