Corncockle (Agrostemma githago)

Price range: £1.34 through £9.99

Corncockle (Agrostemma githago) is an annual wildflower with striking, bright pink, star-shaped flowers. Perfect for meadows, cottage gardens, or naturalised borders and it attracts pollinators.

  1. Sow the seeds directly outdoors from March-May or August-September in a well-prepared, well-drained seedbed.
  2. Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of the soil and lightly cover with a fine layer of compost or grit.
  3. Keep the soil consistently moist until seedlings emerge.
  4. Seeds will usually germinate within 10-21 days.
  5. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them to 20-30 cm apart to allow room for growth.
  6. Choose a sunny, well-drained site for best growth and flowering.
  7. Water moderately during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
  8. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming.
  9. Plants may self-seed for the following season if some flowers are left to mature.

Toxic to chickens and can cause miscarriage in pregnant sheep.
