Planting bare-root perennials

  1. Soak your bare-roots in water for 4-5 hours before you plant them
  2. Pot them up into 1L or 2L pots depending on root size in a good multipurpose compost.
  3. If the root has an obvious crown position this just below the soil surface. If the roots are long and thin, these should be laid out lengthways on the soil and covered with 2cm of soil.
  4. Place the pot somewhere outside in a sheltered position. Keep an eye on them and check for slugs and snails as they grow.
  5. Once there is a good amount of growth, you can plant them in their final position in the border.
  6. These plants are borderline hardy so will need protection if temperatures fall below freezing (see Tips)
