Blackcurrant ‘Ben Connan’ is a compact, early-fruiting variety that produces heavy crops of large, richly flavoured berries. Perfect for cordials, jams, or fresh eating, it is hardy and highly disease-resistant, performing reliably even in cooler climates. An AGM award-winner, each plant can yield over 3.5 kg of fruit from its second season onwards.

Key Facts

Choose a sunny location with at least 6–8 hours of sunlight daily.
Prepare the soil by removing all weeds and digging in plenty of well-rotted manure.
Space plants 140cm apart.
Dig a hole large enough to spread the roots, plant with the crown just below soil level, and firm the soil around the roots.
Water thoroughly and add a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
In February or March, cut back any dead or wayward shoots to encourage healthy growth.
Refresh mulch each spring around March.
