- Start the seeds indoors from February-March.
- Sow the seeds 1-2 cm deep in moist, well-drained seed compost and cover lightly.
- Keep at a temperature of 21-24c until germination occurs.
- Seeds will usually germinate within 14-28 days.
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
- Grow on in bright light, keeping the compost just moist.
- Gradually acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions before planting out.
- Plant out after the risk of frost has passed into a sunny, well-drained site.
- Space plants about 140cm apart to allow for their large, spreading growth.
- Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
- Cut back old foliage after the first frost and cover the crown with straw for protection overwinter.
Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus) is a striking perennial with large, silvery-grey, spiny leaves and bold thistle-like purple flowers. Ideal for borders, it adds dramatic structure and attracts pollinators.
