Soapwort (Saponaria ocymoides)

Soapwort (Saponaria ocymoides) is a low-growing perennial that produces masses of soft pink flowers. Its trailing, evergreen foliage makes it ideal for rock gardens or walls.

  1. Start the seeds indoors between March and April.
  2. Sow the seeds on the surface of moist compost and lightly cover.
  3. Place in a heated propagator at a constant temperature of 15-20c.
  4. Cold stratify if the seeds don’t germinate.
  5. Germination should occur in 10-28 days.
  6. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots.
  7. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions.
  8. When the seedlings have formed 2–3 pairs of true leaves, pinch out the tips.
  9. Plant out once the risk of frost has passed (May–June).
  10. Cut back after flowering to maintain a good shape.
